 Cellulose Ether is derived from Cellulose and is a water-soluble compound used in several industries. It finds its usage mainly in the construction, food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetics industries. Specifically, Cellulose Ether is primarily used in the construction sector as it acts as a binder, thickener, and water retention agent in construction. There are different grades of Cellulose Ether, which have their applicability and properties. The two primary grades of Cellulose Ether HPMC (Hydroxypropyl Methyl Cellulose) and MHEC (Methyl Hydroxyethyl Cellulose) have varied similarities, yet one is more preferred than the other in recent days.

Nowadays, MHEC grade of Cellulose Ether is more preferred than the HPMC grade in the construction industry. Though, both are being utilized widely for increasing bond strength and water retention capacity of a dry mixture of cement and gypsum, few properties differentiate them. The first property differentiating Methyl Hydroxyethyl Cellulose from Hydroxypropyl Methyl Cellulose is gel temperature; the gel temperature of Methyl Hydroxyethyl Cellulose is higher than that of Methyl Hydroxyethyl Cellulose. The gel temperature of HPMC is around 60°c - 70°c, which varies as per its content and production technique; however, the gel temperature of MHEC is generally more than 80°C, which makes it a better alternative. MHEC has better thermal stability owing to its high gel temperature, causing better water retention capacity during summers in South Asian Countries.

Furthermore, Methyl Hydroxyethyl Cellulose has a more significant number of Hydrophilic groups in its structure, eventually leading to more hydrophilicity than the HPMC grade. Having more Hydrophilic groups makes MHEC better in water retention, and hence it is preferred more. In addition, the prices of MHEC grades have been lesser than that of Hydroxypropyl Methyl Cellulose, making them more economical to use. In India, the prices of Cellulose Ether, with respective to all grades, have been marginally increasing from the first week of April.

According to ChemAnalyst, “MHEC grade would be chosen over HPMC grade in countries including India as summers have already approached. Construction industries would go for having cellulose ether with higher gel temperature and better hydrophilicity. Furthermore, the Indian domestic market of Cellulose Ether is most likely to showcase stagnant to a marginal rise in the prices.”

Difference between COB Lights and SMD Lights

 LED lights are constantly being improved for better use, greater versatility and more efficient use of electricity. Compared to traditional incandescent lights, different models of LED lights are very popular, mainly because they can use less energy and last about 25 times longer. This article will focus on difference between COB light and SMD light.

 

SMD vs. COB: What is an SMD?

SMD or "surface mount device" LEDs are the most common LEDs on the market. LED chips are permanently fused to a printed circuit board and are popular because of their versatility. You can find it in light bulbs and light strings, and even in notification lights on cell phones.

 

SMD LED chips come in a variety of sizes. SMD LEDs can accommodate chips with complex designs, such as the 5mm wide SMD 5050. on the other hand, the SMD 3528 is 3.5 mm wide. SMD chips are small, almost approaching the design of a flat square computer chip.

The SMD LED chip can have more than two contacts (which makes it different from the classic DIP LED). There can be up to 3 diodes on a chip, each with a separate circuit. Each circuit will have a cathode and an anode, resulting in 2, 4 or 6 contacts in the chip.

 

This configuration is what makes the SMD chip more versatile (compare SMD to COB). The chip can include red, green and blue diodes. Using these three diodes, you can create almost any color by adjusting the output level.

 

SMD chips are also known for their brightness. They can produce 50 to 100 lumens per watt.

 

SMD vs COB: What is a COB?

One of the latest developments in LED, COB or "chip on board" technology is more efficient use of energy. Like SMDs, COP chips have multiple diodes on the same surface. But the difference between COB and SMD LED lights is that COB LEDs have more diodes.

 

COB chips usually have 9 or more diodes. COB chips also have only 1 circuit and 2 contacts, independent of the number of diodes. This simple circuit design is the reason for the panel-like appearance of COB LED lights (SMD lights, on the other hand, look like a group of smaller lights).

Unlike SMDs, however, COB LED lights cannot be used to make color changing bulbs or lights. This is because there are only 2 contacts and 1 circuit. Multiple adjustment channels are needed to create the color changing effect. Another difference between COB and SMD LED lights is the use of energy.COBs are known for their better lumens per watt ratio and thermal efficiency. This has a lot to do with the design of COB LEDs, and the ceramic substrate used to dissipate heat from the chips.

 

Previously, heavy-duty technologies such as spotlights and floodlights made from LEDs were non-standard because you needed multiple LED light sources to produce this high lumen output.

 

But now, COB chips can produce a lot of lumens with a lot less energy. You can find it in a variety of bulbs and applications, such as cell phone flashes or dumb cameras. It has a higher range, with a minimum of 80 lumens per watt.
