O-Ring vs Gasket

An O Ring Gasket is a type of seal or gasket used in mechanical and plumbing applications. It is shaped like a ring with a round cross-section, and is typically made of rubber, silicone, or other elastomeric material. O-ring gaskets are used to create a static seal between two or more mating parts, such as between a valve and a pipe fitting. They are commonly used in plumbing and mechanical systems to prevent leaks, and are often found in a wide range of industrial, automotive, and other applications. O-ring gaskets are easy to install and remove, and can be used in a variety of applications where a reliable seal is required.

o ring vs gasket

When choosing a seal for your application, how do you know whether a gasket or o-ring is right for you? Here are the major differences between gaskets and o-rings you need to consider.

O-Ring Basics

As the name suggests, o-rings are round, ring-shaped sealing devices that sit in a groove between two parts, which are often cylindrical. It is the compression of the two parts that allow the o-ring to form an air or liquid-tight seal. Generally, o-rings can withstand pressure and vibration within their application. Based on their shape, o-rings can be designed for both static and dynamic applications.

O-Rings can be manufactured in a variety of different flexible materials and can be customized in size and thickness depending on the design.

Common applications that require o-rings include:

Hydraulics

Fuel systems

Medical and pharmaceutical

Oil

Pipe joints

HVAC

Gasket Basics

While o-rings are typically round and vary in thickness, gaskets are flat seals that sit between two flat surfaces. Gaskets are often circular, however they can be cut into virtually any shape, including square, triangle, rectangle or any other complex form. Similar to o-rings, gasket seals are often manufactured with flexible materials. However, gaskets can also be designed with harder materials such as rigid polymers or metal.

Common applications that require gaskets include:

Electronics

Electrical motors

Power generation

Transportation and automotive

Telecommunication devices

Choosing the Best Seal for Your Application

While gaskets and o-rings are both dependable sealing devices, their stark differences make them suitable for different environments. O-Rings are the best choice for high-pressure applications as they can withstand extreme amounts without failure. While both sealing devices can function in a wide range of temperatures, gaskets are better suited for extreme temperature environments.

The shape of the seal is also a key deciding factor between gaskets and o-rings. O-Rings are made for circular joints and require a groove, whereas gaskets can be designed to fit virtually any shape.

When Should You Change Brake Pads And Rotors?

On average, brake pads should be replaced every 25,000 to 65,000 miles, while rotors typically should be changed anywhere from 30,000 to 70,000 miles. However, the exact number can differ depending on driving conditions and styles. The good news is, you'll likely experience minor symptoms when your brake pads are getting towards their end of life, making diagnosis and repairs easy. Not sure if it's time to change your brake pads or rotors? Here are 6 common signs it's time for new pads and rotors.

Ceramic Brake Pad for Audi Passat

1. Squeaking or Squealing Coming From Brakes

If your brake pads are near the end of their useful life, the first symptom you'll begin to notice is a squeaking or squealing noise coming from the brakes. Squealing brake pads are typically caused by excessively worn down pads. Once you've worn down your pads enough you'll start to experience a grinding noise, at which time you'll also begin to damage your rotors, making the cost of repair even more expensive.

2. Grinding Sound When Braking

Like we stated above, if you're experiencing a grinding noise while you're applying pressure to the brake pedal, your brake pads need to be replaced ASAP. Some OEM brake pads have built in metal wear indicators, which are designed to make a loud noise and alert you that it's time to replace the pads. If you leave the brake pads to continue grinding, you're opening yourself up to a lot more damage and higher repair costs.

3. Vibration When Braking

Vibration when you apply the brakes is another sign that your vehicle's braking system is in need of professional help. Chances are that your rotors are warped and created uneven brake pad wear at the same time.

4. Taking Longer To Stop

Another major sign that your brakes need to be checked out is loss of performance when applying the brakes. If you're experiencing less than ideal stoppage times while applying your brakes, it may mean your brake pads are worn down completely or that your brake fluid is low (often times due to a leak). For a true understanding of what's going on with your brakes, you'll want to get to a brake mechanic as soon as possible to ensure you don't lose all braking abilities.

5. Brake Pad Indicator Light Comes On

Most modern vehicles come with brake warning lights that appear on your dash. One is your Antilock Braking System (ABS) light and the other is your brake system warning light. Your brake light won't always come on when there is an issue — it's also the light that appears on your dash when your parking brake is engaged. But if you're seeing a brake warning light and your parking brake isn't engaged, it's time to have a brake expert take a look at your system to diagnose your issues.

6. Your Brake Pads Appear To Be Thin

One way to easily check on your brake pads is to visually inspect them for wear. To do this, look between the spokes of your wheels and locate your brake pad. If it appears to be less than a ¼ inch or 6.4 mm thick, you're probably due for a set of new brake pads.

What are Curtain Walls?

The exterior of a building is important for the structural integrity of the building, while protecting the building’s interior. Curtain walls is one of the ways to protect your building from harsh outdoor elements.

What is a curtain wall?

Unlike other building materials, a curtain wall system is thin and lightweight, usually aluminum and glass. These walls are not structural, and by design, they are only able to carry their own weight, while transferring the load of wind and gravity to the structure of the building. The design makes it air and water resistant, to ensure that the interior of the building remains airtight.

System types

Curtain walls are available in three main systems: face-sealed, water-managed, and pressure-equalized. Face-sealed walls depend on perfect sealing between units of the wall and frame. Water-managed systems include moisture drains to prevent the intrusion of water in the building. However, neither face-sealed or water-managed systems create an air barrier.

The pressure-equalized system blocks all forces while keeping the building’s interior air-tight. The outside framing is designed to wash away water and prevent penetration. This is the strongest system, which provides a reliable resistance to air and water.

Benefits of curtain walls

The use of curtain walls has many advantages. Because of the use of lightweight materials, curtain wall systems are an affordable option for a building’s exterior casing. Depending on the size of the building, the savings may be compounded.

Because of the system’s ability to resist air and water infiltration, curtain walls are energy efficient. This will reduce your cost of heating, cooling, and lighting the building. So in addition to saving you money on construction, it has long-term savings benefits.

Another benefit of the curtain wall system is that it can be installed in small or large units, depending on the needs and preference for your project. The walls may span the distance of the floor to ceiling or be installed across multiple floors. This allows for a greater flexibility in design.

In part because of the versatility of the system, curtain walls are an attractive modern-looking option for you any building exterior.

Features of curtain wall systems

Though specifics will vary depending on the requirements of the project, curtain walls take into account important elements, including the effects of thermal expansion and contraction, the sway and movement of a building, and thermal efficiency.

Curtain walls can be installed with several glazing options, either inside, outside, or structurally. They can also be installed as a stick framed wall, which is split by mullions to create smaller panes. You can choose the length of your lines and the depths of the million depending on the requirements of the design. Stick-framed curtain walls provide lateral resistance, while allowing thermal movement.

You can also choose between a variety of face covers to have maximum control over the aesthetics of the building. Because they can be installed in any size and design, you can create unique and visually stunning exteriors. All without ever having to sacrifice cost or efficiency.

Can I Use the Silicone Face Wash Brush Every Day?

Silicone, a non-porous material similar to soft rubber. It is hypoallergenic, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial. They are soft and gentle, yet strong enough to wipe away dirt and residue from smooth surfaces. Our silicone face brushes are made from FDA approved top quality medical grade liquid silicone with ISO10993 certified Nusil medical grade colorant with biocompatibility report, and our silicone brush heads meet the highest USP standards, our top quality brush heads effectively remove all traces of dirt, oil, and cosmetic residue, and also provide you with a SPA level massage to keep your face glowing and rosy.

Can I Use a Silicone Face Wash Brush Every Day?

It depends on your skin type! Different skin types can use silicone brushes with different frequencies. We have summarized the following skin characteristics to help you.

Oily and Non-sensitive Skin

Oily skin requires scrubbing to remove pore-clogging oils and impurities. If your skin is oily and not sensitive, start using the silicone face brush twice a week. If you notice a significant change in your skin within 3-4 weeks, then increase the frequency to every other day. If the gentle scrubbing of the silicone face brush suits your skin, then you can use it up to once a day. However, you can take a break once in a while, especially on days when you are not going out.

In the morning, when you sleep on your pillow and your face is covered in oil and sweat, scrub your face with the silicone face scrubbing brush. Or, you can scrub your face at night before you go to bed, which allows your skin pores to breathe. The best thing you can do is scrub your face one morning and then scrub your face the next night. Whichever routine makes your skin feel fresher, you can stick to that time.

When using the silicone brush you can start at a slower pace on delicate areas and then pick up the pace as you scrub your neck and chin. Try to make circular movements while scrubbing your face to promote blood circulation while deep cleaning your facial pores.

Oily and Sensitive Skin

If you have oily skin that is prone to acne and easily irritated, start by using a silicone facial brush once a week. Eventually, you can scrub your face once a week. Once you are sure that a silicone face brush is right for you, you can gently scrub your face 2-3 times a week.

In case your skin feels irritated and acne-prone after scrubbing with the silicone face brush, try switching to a different face wash. The soft silicone bristles are suitable for all skin types.

Another reason why your skin may feel irritated after scrubbing is improper hydration. Make sure you use a non-greasy moisturizer after scrubbing your face to lock in all the essential oils and prevent them from becoming sensitive.

Silicone face brushes are known to provide gentle and mild exfoliation for sensitive skin, so it is one of the best ways to remove dirt and oil build-up from pores. A silicone face brush can also relieve bacteria buildup on the skin.

For sensitive skin, start with a silicone brush with soft, fine bristles for a gentle, non-irritating scrubbing experience.

Dry and Non-sensitive skin

Dry and non-sensitive skin is a blessing if you take care of it properly! However, if you do not remove dead skin cells, dry skin can lead to flaking skin. If you have dry but sensitive skin, use a manual silicone face wash brush about twice or three times a week.

After scrubbing, be sure to use a moisturizer so your skin doesn't feel dry. Before going to bed, use a gentle cleanser and don't forget to moisturize your face as this will help eliminate flaky skin.

Get into the habit of using a silicone face brush to help your skin breathe. There is a belief that a silicone face wash brush is just another ordinary cleansing brush. But in reality, it is very good for your skin and it certainly does not cause any harm.

Dry and Sensitive skin

It's not common, but people with dry skin are also prone to acne, inflammation and itchiness. We recommend that you scrub for less than a minute the first time to see if your skin is irritated. Try wetting your face with warm water to wash off the cleanser as well.

One of the misconceptions about silicone face brushes is that they should be used on sensitive skin. But the truth is that silicone face brushes can be used on all types of skin. Just make sure that, for dry, sensitive skin, you use a gentle circular motion, a cleanser appropriate for your skin type and the proper frequency, which should be no more than twice a week. Follow with a moisturizer and serum for proper hydration to soothe the skin.

A Guide to Annealed Wire

Wire is used throughout industry for a wide range of applications, from binding and securing small products together to providing the framework and support for large-scale structures. Manufacturers accommodate all of these applications by creating wire with different shapes, sizes, flexibilities, and formulations to suit various requirements and restrictions. One of the most commonly available types of wire is annealed wire.

Annealed wire—also referred to as annealed tie wire—is low-carbon steel wire that has been annealed to increase its ductility and decrease its hardness. These qualities result in higher flexibility without the loss of durability, which, combined, allow the wire to demonstrate self-tying and self-locking capabilities. It is available in several variations, each of which offers unique characteristics that make it suitable for different use cases.

In the following article, we provide a comprehensive overview of annealed wire, including what it is, how it’s made, the types available, and typical industrial applications.

What Is Annealed Wire?

As indicated above, annealed wire is low-carbon steel wire that has undergone the annealing process. The resulting product is soft and durable, qualities that allow it to remain intact when used in one of its most common applications—i.e., tying around itself or another product. For this reason, it is also sometimes called annealed tie wire.

How Is Annealed Wire Made?

Annealing is a heat treatment process that involves heating a material above its recrystallization temperature and cooling it back to room temperature. The cooling stage for ferrous materials (e.g., steel) is more gradual than that of non-ferrous materials (e.g., brass and copper) to prevent the metal from cracking or becoming brittle.

Many metalworking processes increase the hardness of material, which can make it harder to complete subsequent manufacturing operations. Annealing increases the ductility and decreases the hardness of the material, resulting in better formability and machinability. These qualities are essential for many wire applications.click here

The manufacturing process for annealed wire is as follows:

  • Forming the wire from steel (typically low-carbon steel)

  • Heating the wire to above the base material’s crystallization point but below its melting point

  • Gradually cooling the heated material to below its crystallization point

  • Applying oil to prevent rusting and facilitate dispensing through machinery (for black annealed wire)

The Annealing Process at Coastal Wire

At Coastal Wire, we use bell annealing furnaces to achieve a full annealing process that yields a consistent finish with no weak spots. Rather than relying on open-air heating or rapid cooling—both of which can introduce variation into the final wire product—we work with top-of-the-line equipment and thoroughly regulated production methods. Other annealing processes like strand annealing—sometimes used to save money—can’t compete with the thoroughness and quality of full annealing.

Types of Annealed Wires

Annealed wires are available in several variations, depending on the techniques employed during their manufacture. The types available include:

Black annealed wire. Black annealed wire gets its name from its distinctive black color, which comes from the addition of an anti-corrosive surface coating after the annealing process. It is used in a wide range of industrial and consumer applications, including baling, and handcrafting.

Bright wire. Bright annealed wire exhibits a bright and smooth finish. It is generally employed in binding and tying applications.

In addition to being available in black and bright variations, annealed wire comes in several gauges (i.e., wire diameters), forms (e.g., straight cut, loop, coiled, and U-type) and packaging options (e.g., merchant wire, box wire, and tie wire).

Merchant wire: several large coils of annealed wire wound onto a stand

Box wire: smaller and tighter coils of annealed wire weight individually packed into boxes

Tie wire: annealed wire (packaged as merchant wire or box wire) intended for use in tying applications

What You Need to Know About Hydrogen Sulfide?

What is H2S gas?

Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) is a gas commonly found during the drilling and production of crude oil and natural gas, plus in wastewater treatment and utility facilities and sewers. The gas is produced as a result of the microbial breakdown of organic materials in the absence of oxygen. Colorless, flammable, poisonous and corrosive, H2S gas is noticeable by its rotten egg smell. With toxicity similar to carbon monoxide, which prevents cellular respiration, monitoring and early detection of H2S could mean the difference between life and death.

Impact on safety (short-term)

Gas is a silent threat, often invisible to the body’s senses. Inhalation is the primary route of exposure to hydrogen sulfide. Though it may be easily smelled by some people at small concentrations, continuous exposure to even low levels of H2S quickly deadens the sense of smell (olfactory desensitization). Exposure to high levels of the gas can deaden the sense of smell instantly. Although the scent of H2S is a characteristic, smell is not a dependable indicator of H2S gas presence or for indicating increasing concentrations of the specialty gas.

H2S irritates the mucous membranes of the body and the respiratory tract, among other things. Following exposure, short-term, or acute, symptoms may include a headache, nausea, convulsions, and eye and skin irritation. Injury to the central nervous system can be immediate and serious after exposure. At high concentrations, only a few breaths are needed to induce unconsciousness, coma, respiratory paralysis, seizures, even death.

Impact on health (long-term)

Those having prolonged exposure to high enough levels of H2S gas to cause unconsciousness may continue to experience headaches, reduced attention span and motor functions. Pulmonary effects of H2S gas exposure may not be apparent for up to 72 hours following removal from the affected environment. Delayed pulmonary edema, a buildup of excess fluid in the lungs, may also occur following exposure to high concentrations.

H2S does not accumulate in the body, but repeated/prolonged exposure to moderate levels can cause low blood pressure, headache, loss of appetite and weight loss. Prolonged exposure to low levels may cause painful skin rashes and irritated eyes. Repeated exposure over time to high levels of H2S may cause convulsions, coma, brain and heart damage, even death.

Impact on facilities

Heavier than air, H2S gas accumulates in low lying areas of poorly ventilated spaces. In oil and gas applications, sour gas (products containing H2S gas) in the presence of air and moisture may form sulfuric acid, capable of corroding metals. Facility equipment, including the internal surfaces of various components, faces reduced durability and impact strength, potentially leading to premature failure.

Detection of H2S gas

Hydrogen sulfide is a fast acting poison, impacting many systems within the body. Wearable gas sensors are necessary for early detection and alerting, as the body’s senses are not reliable indicators. Importantly, gas detectors such as Blackline's G7 wireless gas detector, should be considered as they alert live monitoring personnel of worker H2S gas exposure. Devices with a fast response time and sturdy construction are important for use in harsh environments where H2S may occur. Additionally, as H2S may desensitize and render the body unconscious in no time at high concentrations, connected personal monitoring equipment is crucial.

What are different types of drilling rigs?

Rotary drilling rigs are used for most drilling operations today. The hole is drilled by rotating a bit and applying a downward force. Generally, the bit is turned by rotating the entire drill string, using a rotary table or a Top drive at the surface, and the downward force is applied to the bit by using a heavy thick-walled pipe, called drill collars, in the drill string above the bit.

The cuttings generated by drilling are lifted to the surface by circulating a drilling fluid down the drill string, through the bit, and up the annular space between the hole and the drill string. The cuttings are separated from the drilling fluid at the surface.

Rotary drilling rigs can be classified as land rigs and marine rigs. The main features of land rigs are portability and maximum operating depth. Land rigs are built so that the derrick can be moved easily and reused for drilling new holes. The various rig components are skid-mounted so that the rig can be moved in units and connected easily. The jackknife, or cantilever, derrick is assembled on the ground with pins and then raised as a unit using the rig-hoisting equipment.

62fdea399aaad.jpg

CSD300 Hydraulic Rotary Truck Mounted Borehole Drilling Rig

The portable mast which is suitable for moderate depth wells usually is mounted on wheeled trucks or trailers that incorporate the hoisting machinery, engines, and derricks as a single unit. The telescoped portable mast is raised to the vertical position and then extended to full height by hydraulic pistons on the unit.

The main features of the marine rigs are portability and maximum water depth operation. Submersible drilling barges generally are used for inland water drilling where wave action is not severe and water depths are less than 20 ft. The entire rig is assembled on the barge, and the unit is towed to the location and sunk by flooding the barge.

Once drilling is completed, the water is pumped out from the barge, allowing it to be moved to the next location. After the well is completed, a platform must be built to protect the wellhead and support the surface production equipment.

6214a3d234141.jpg

 Rock Blasting Drilling Rig

When water depth is less than about 350 ft, jackup can be used. The jackup is bottom supported rig using metallic legs. On location, the legs are lowered to the bottom and the platform is jacked up above the wave action by means of hydraulic jacks.

Semisubmersible rigs are more expensive than jackup rigs and, thus, are used mostly in water depths too great for resting on the bottom. Semisubmersible rigs employ large engines to position the rig over the hole dynamically. This can extend greatly the maximum operating water depth. The shape of semisubmersible rigs tends to dampen wave motion greatly regardless of wave direction. This allows its use in areas where wave action is severe.

The second type of floating vessel used in offshore drilling is the drillship. Drillships are designed with the rig equipment and anchoring system mounted on the central turret. The ship is rotated about the central turret using thrusters so that the ship always faces incoming waves. This helps to dampen wave motion.

Beach Chairs: Seven Things to Know Before You Buy

The warmth of the sun, the sound of the surf hitting the shore, and you catching some zzz’s. If you’re lying on a blanket, a day at the beach means a day of fun and relaxation and potentially a lot of sand. Today, beach chairs are so functional they are really handy to have around not only at the beach, but poolside, game side, or in your backyard. Before you commit to one, familiarize yourself with the available options, so the one you select will most suit your needs.

Fact #1: Beach chair frames are constructed of different materials

When considering beach chair construction, basically three options are available to choose from: steel, aluminum, and wood. Steel is the sturdiest, aluminum is lighter in weight making it easier to carry, and wood can be heavier to carry, but offers an upscale look. Powder coated paint on chairs helps with scratch and rust resistance. Aluminum chairs protect more against rust than powder coated steel chairs do.

Fact #2: You have several seat fabric options

Seat fabrication can range in denier (a measurement of fabric thickness and weight) from canvas, cotton, nylon or polyester. Aim for denier strength between 420D-600D for durability. Cotton and canvas deniers are softer for comfort. Polyester and nylon deniers offer more weather-resistance. Padded fabric will provide a cushioning effect that may be more comfortable. Otherwise material selection is more of a personal taste and comfort decision.

Fact #3: Weight support varies

Weight support can generally range from up to 225-400 lbs. for adults and up to 75-100 lbs. for children. Always check the manufacturer’s instructions for weight limits before use.

Fact #4: Positions Matter

Beach chairs can simply unfold into a sitting upright position or provide up to multiple reclining variations including completely lying flat on your back or stomach.

Fact #5: What other key features should you consider?

There are two other major factors to consider: portability and arm rest options.

Portability: Some beach chairs fold in half vertically or horizontally, while others fold into three sections. If you plan on transporting the chair, you will want to select one that can be carried easily. Look for chairs with an attachable sling shoulder carry strap, a separate carry bag with strap, or backpack style carry straps.

10 Benefits of Using Resistance Bands During Exercise

Resistance bands are great for those who want to exercise at home, or who like to take their workouts along when they travel, but their value doesn't end there. There are many benefits to these simple exercise tools, including versatility, convenience, safety, and effectiveness. The more you learn about the advantages of resistance exercises, the more you'll be motivated to add them to your own home gym.

These inexpensive exercise tools are a convenient option for people of any age or fitness level. But don't let their simplicity fool you. Resistance band exercises are surprisingly effective and offer many benefits over traditional free weights. Below are just a few of the benefits that our experts want you to know!

1. Get a Cost-Effective Workout

Whether you buy them individually or as a set, resistance bands are an inexpensive addition to your home gym equipment. Some bands are even sold with a guided exercise DVD.

2. Adapt Easily For Multiple Fitness Levels

Resistance bands come in multiple resistance levels, usually light, medium or heavy. You can further adjust the amount of resistance during exercise just by giving more or less slack on the band, as well as by combining multiple bands to increase the challenge.

3. Modify Familiar Exercises

Resistance band exercises are often based on familiar strength-training moves. For example, if you stand on one end of the cord and curl your arm up while holding the other end, you've replaced your standard dumbbell bicep curl.

4. Exercise Your Whole Body

Many kits come with suggested exercises for nearly every major muscle group in your body. Stepping on one end of a band or looping it around a stationary object, for example, opens up many exercise possibilities.

5. Save on Storage Space

When you don't have a lot of room for a home gym, resistance bands are a great option that store in very little space. You can hang them on a hook after you exercise, or coil them up to store in a box or drawer.

6. Exercise on The Road

Because they are so small and portable, resistance equipment is a great way to take your workout with you when you travel. There are many resistance band exercises that can easily be done in the small space of a hotel room.

7. Add Variety to Your Workouts

Over time, your muscles adapt to any new exercise routine. It's a good idea to mix it up by cross-training with free weights, machines, and resistance band exercises. Each will work your muscles in a slightly different way.

8. Exercise Safely, Even When Alone

Resistance bands offer strength-training without the risk of dropping a heavy weight on your foot or crushing your fingers between weight plates. That makes them ideal for working out when you don't have a personal trainer or exercise partner to spot you.

9. Combine with Other Exercise Equipment

While resistance bands work great on their own, they can also be combined with other exercise equipment. Performing bicep curls with both a resistance band and a dumbbell will give you the combined benefits of each type of equipment.

10. Get An Effective Workout

Although there are differences between free weight and resistance band exercises, both are effective. Picture the arc motion your arm makes while doing a bicep curl. Free weights will feel heaviest at the beginning of that arc, while resistance bands make your muscles work harder at the end of the arc (when the band is most taut). Either way, your body is moving against resistance, and that will give your muscles an effective workout.
